 2023 Preview 


       East Lawrence finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year East Lawrence finished eighth in Class 4A region seven with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The defense allowed a team record 514 points last season. The Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as East Lawrence averaged scoring just 11.9 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 51.4 points a game.

       The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the East Lawrence football program has struggled with a record of 34-97.

       Over the past 25 seasons, East Lawrence has not won much with a record of 59-193. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 59th in Class 4A and 380th in the AHSAA. The Eagles have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time.




       The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Mac Hampton as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Hampton spent this past season as an assistant coach for the Eagles and now takes over for Sean Holt. He was the head coach at R.A. Hubbard from 2017-2021. Over the course of his career, Coach Hampton's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

       Seven coaching changes in the past eleven seasons is not the formula to build a winning program at any high school. Let us hope Coach Hampton can bring stability to the Eagles program. The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-44 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 4A and 22nd in the AHSAA.

       The Eagles enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 10 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at East Lawrence will be to simply win some games.

       The Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Winston County on Friday, September 1 at Malcolm Blake Stadium. Last year the Winston County Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in third place in Class 2A region five. The Yellow Jackets lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to Fyffe by a score of 35-6.

       East Lawrence and Winston County have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 1-1-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2022 with Winston County winning by a score of 40-15.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
